Devotees had their hopes crushed when BMW
quelled rumors that there would be an M version of new 1 Series coupe. As it turns out, there may be no need for one. The U.S.-bound car will come in two models: the 128i, which will feature a 3.0-liter inline six, making 230 hp, and the 135i, which adds a twin turbocharger to the same arrangement. This faster version of the engine produces 300 hp, delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. This means the engine produces 100 hp per liter—which is the soul and mission of the M. The 135i should reach 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, according to the company.
