There’s a fascinating article in today’s NY Times that takes the pulse of Asian cell phone makers in the wake of the iPhone launch. Samsung comes off sounding rather confident that they’ll have an answer to the iPhone by the time it reaches Asia as scheduled in 2008, but the shocker quote comes from S. Jay Yim, vice president of overseas marketing at Pantech, who said, “Tech-wise, the iPhone is not so advanced.”

OK, I’m an acknowledged iPhone refusnik (for the time being) but even I know that the iPhone’s touchscreen technology is right on the edge of what cell phones of today can offer. Pantech’s genius mouthpiece may be engaging in thoughtless bluster, but as I’ve said before, given enough time, Samsung is probably the number one manufacturer capable of mounting a significant challenge to the iPhone in Asia.
