Second Life Insider's Tateru Nino (known for her detailed statistical surveys she regularly conducts in Second Life) has recently uncovered a clue as to what Microsoft may be planning next in the virtual world. During her June 9th statistical sweep, she found a private island named "Microsoft Xbox." As Nino points out, Microsoft is skeptical as to the viability of Second Life as an Xbox 360 product, which suggests that this development is merely an extension of the company's marketing efforts for the console.

Microsoft Game Studios VP Shane Kim has been notably dismissive of Sony's efforts with PlayStation Home, which will probably have some bearing as to whether or how soon Microsoft will incorporate virtual world elements into its Live service.

So, is Sony jumping the gun, or is Microsoft suffering from tunnel vision?
