Discouraged by the reports saying that hundreds of people have already lined up in front of your local Apple store? Yeah, us too. The fact is, only a sucker would get in line at an Apple store now. With many stores limited to 500 iPhones, and each line-waiter eligible for up two phones, any line that has more than 250 people in front of it contains people who are going to be very, very disappointed this evening.

Here are three better options.

  • Head down to your local AT&T store. Sure, you won't get as much media coverage. But in San Francisco this morning, there were 4 people waiting at the Marina district AT&T store, while 120 people queued up (some all night) in front of the Apple store. In nearby Burlingame, the Apple store line has 70 people right now, while the AT&T store a block away has 3.

  • Buy your iPhone on EBay, where the things have already been listed by people currently waiting in line. The current Buy It Now price is around $1500, but rates could go higher as the frenzy builds. Here's a link: iPhones on EBay

  • Pay some hungry or tired-looking person for his or her spot in line. $50 will get you a spot in NYC, reports Wired News photo editor Keith Axline.
