
Company officials announced a new family of V6
engines that will be able to run on three cylinders—raising fuel economy by six to eight percent. It also plans to put its two-mode hybrid powertrain in more vehicles, beginning with 2009 models. And it plans to put a clean-diesel engine in the 2009 Jeep Cherokee. The automaker has less specific plans to develop a four-cylinder diesel engine for North America, a new fuel-efficient dual clutch transmission that could begin appearing in cars in 2010 and a new more efficient axle technology.
