Imagine, if you can, a VW GTI with 650 hp. This is not some garage monkey's tuner. Volkswagen actually produced the prototype you see, basing it on the company's venerated W-12 engine. It's a hatchback Golf, just like your Uncle Ernie's, but VW mounted the engine midship. And the car has a carbon-fiber body. The likelihood that you will ever see this car in a showroom is practically zero. Volkswagen produced it as a showboat of technology and to augur changes that are coming to its product line in the coming months.
