The first comprehensive study of marine life in the "deep, dark waters" around Antarctica has yielded more than 700 new species, including carnivorous sponges and crustaceans that look like so much origami. Not bad for an ecosystem thought too hostile to sustain more than a handful of creatures.

Dr Katrin Linse, an author of the paper and a marine biologist from British Antarctic Survey (BAS), said: "What was once thought to be a featureless abyss is in fact a dynamic, variable and biologically rich environment.
