The Techcrunch 20, an event where startups get to show off their new tech business to a panel of judges, has announced their panel of experts. I’ll admit that I’m excited to see what comes out of the Techcrunch 20, but MC Hammer as a panel expert? Seriously? I thought this was a joke, but after re-reading the list of otherwise incredibly, well, credible panelists, I decided this couldn’t be a joke.
Sure, Hammer is a Bay Area institution (so he’s got local cred), and he “was” a successful pop musician (I refuse to call him a rapper). But does his yesteryear success really translate into being a relevant music business expert in today’s vastly different music market?
Would you really want your snazzy new Web 2.0 music-thingamajig judged by an embarrassing anachronism from the ‘80s? Are the Techcrunch 20 people really that disconnected from the current music business that this was the best they could come up with? Please tell me it’s not Hammer Time again… Please.
