Samsung Washing Machine Kills Microbes in Cold Water

Anything can be invested with cutting-edge gadgetry, and washing machines are no exception. Samsung, when it's not making nigh-useless handheld computers, adds similarly advanced tech to its new front-loading tumbler, the VRT.

VRT here stands for vibration reduction technology, as the designers' intent is to silence the machine, especially when working with an unbalanced load. It gleaned the highest grading offered by EnergyStar, and the marketing matter claims that it has the ability to kill bacteria in cold water without the use of chlorine. It does so using silver ions, however, which sounds a bit scary.

Notice how we've gone back to improving the central utility of a device rather than adding pointless extravagances to them? There was a point a few years ago where it seemed everything would gain an LCD screen and an internet connection. Though we thank heaven that nonsense is over, however, I'm still not sold on a $1,300 washing machine. And that's if you get the basic white one. A blue, red or grey paint job is $100 extra.
