“Business Week” reporter Bruno Giussani took a drive in Michelin’s Hy-Light prototype recently and found it to be fast, silent and completely pollution free. Unlike most hydrogen-cell cars, which suck oxygen from the surrounding air, the Hy-Light carries an oxygen tank. This eliminates the need for an on-board compressor and a system for controlling air quality, but it also means that you must fill both a hydrogen tank and an oxygen tank. This system increases the efficiency of the car by almost one third. Also novel to the Hy-Light, electric motors and suspension components are embedded in the wheels—again for greater efficiency.
