HP claims it will "resolve confusion for customers" this week by offering desktops fitted out with dual-format optical drives. In other words, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD in a single tray, with a colossal price premium attached.

The new systems will be available from tomorrow, with other available upgrades including an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Tuner for recording HD broadcasts, and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 graphics card — just the GTS version, mind you. HP's random product name generator has selected HP "Pavilion Media Center m8010y" and "HP Pavilion d4890y" for the new new lineup.
