At the end of each conference day, the line for taxis outside BIO 2007 is long and slow -- yet walking a block down the street and intercepting an incoming cab takes just a minute. Why don't more attendees do so?
It's probably not because they're particularly nice. As the convention center shoeshine guy told me, the BIO 2007 attendees are the rudest group he's seen. So why are folks too hurried to converse with the man shining their shoes content, at the end of a long day, to stand in line for half an hour? Sometimes a line is just a line -- but perhaps even industry titans and scientific prodigies aren't above a bit of herdthink. Something to keep in mind.
