Why do tires stink? Rubber compounds, any way you compound them, just can’t manage to please the nostrils. As reported in “Car and Driver”
this month, Kumho has introduced a tire with a lavender fragrance. At $100 a pop, each tire has a rubber compound infused with perfumed synthetic oil. Those who’ve tested the tires report that you can barely smell anything when the tires are cold. But even a short drive heats them sufficiently that they begin to . . . effuse. A little wheel spin when the light turns green leaves the lady behind you in a pleasing cloud of your smoke. The scent is only good for a year, however.
