Silicon Valley has always been a bit spooky, but in a recent New York Times story we find out that the Department of Defense has been searching for new opportunities with small Valley startups. The Defense Venture Catalyst Initiative (shortened, of course, to DeVenCI) wants to peek into your VC garage and find the next big thing.

The group is looking for ventures dealing in identity management, network operations and security, applied cryptography, information Delivery and security management Tools—spooky!

The article quotes DeVenCI’s director as saying, “[Venture capitalists] have knowledge of emerging technology that may be developed by companies as small as two guys in a garage… These are companies that are not involved in the D.O.D. supply chain.” Well, they are now. Mulder? Scully!
