The command center at Cheyenne Mountain was supposed to be effectively mothballed as operations were shifted to nearby Peterson Air Force Base, but a new study by the research arm of Congress suggests that moving house may not be the right answer. The General Accounting Office, which never met a Pentagon idea it actually liked, is saying that more analysis is needed before moving operations out of the mountain bunker:
We believe Congress should consider restricting DOD's authority to use funds to renovate all proposed locations to accept functions designated to move out of Cheyenne Mountain until such time as all security analyses are complete, the full costs of the move are determined, and
DOD provides Congress with an analysis of the operational effects of the proposed realignments.
Saving money wasn't the only reason the former head of NORAD wanted to move out of Cheyenne Mountain. Being stuck in traffic in the middle of a military exercise was another.
