Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN), one of the lead sponsors of the White House endorsed stem-cell bill, began his speech by saying that he understands the molecular biology behind the science. Then he displays his lack of respect for science, by saying science will never be able to come up with a non-cloning method to overcome immune rejection.

The only way a stem cell therapy -- embryonic stem cell therapy -- is ever going to work without anti-rejection drugs is if you clone yourself. Now [embryonic stem cell supporters] don't want to talk about that right now. ... That's the dirty little secret that nobody with embryonic stem cells wants to talk about.

His answer? Altered nuclear transfer or oocyte assisted reprogramming.

Why Coleman supports altered nuclear transfer, which is cloning to produce a developmentally crippled embryo, I don't understand. It seems logically inconsistent to oppose somatic cell nuclear transfer, but support altered nuclear transfer.
