Senator Thomas Carper (D-DE) really questioned Bush's claimed logic for restricting embryonic stem cell research: Bush's policy doesn't prevent the destruction of a single embryo.
Does it make sense to you that these embryos that have been created at fertility clinics are just going to be destroyed. ... Does it make more sense to just allow those fertilized eggs to be destroyed, or does it make more sense -- at the discretion of the husband and wife -- for those embryos to help preserve life? Enhance life? Improve life?
To paraphrase Stephen Colbert: President Bush -- cowardly president, or liar-liar-pants-on-fire president?
