Pain Ray Injures Airman

Backers of the military's pain ray like to say that there's only been one substantial injury in 10,000 human trials. Well, make that two. Air Force Times is reporting that "an airman received second-degree burns" earlier in the week during a test of the weapon at Moody Air
Force Base in Georgia.

He was being treated at Doctors Hospital in Augusta, Ga., and is expected to make a full recovery, Marien Corps spokeswoman Maj. Sarah Fullwood, spokeswoman Fullwood said.

Fullwood said more than 600 people have been exposed a total of more than 10,000
times to the beam, and there has only been one other injury that required medical attention: a case of second-degree burns that occurred during lab testing in 1999.

Not exactly. According to David Hambling's research, six others have been blistered by the ray gun, too. Still, even eight out of 10,000 is a pretty decent track record. But the Moody trials are the most extensive, most realistic tests yet of the weapon, which uses millimeter waves to heat the top layer of the skin. So maybe we'll see that number start to climb.
