
Backers of the military's pain ray like to say that there's only been one substantial injury in 10,000 human trials. Well, make that two. Air Force Times is reporting that "an airman received second-degree burns" earlier in the week during a test of the weapon at Moody Air
Force Base in Georgia.
Not exactly. According to David Hambling's research, six others have been blistered by the ray gun, too. Still, even eight out of 10,000 is a pretty decent track record. But the Moody trials are the most extensive, most realistic tests yet of the weapon, which uses millimeter waves to heat the top layer of the skin. So maybe we'll see that number start to climb.
