Soon, you'll be able to run OpenOffice apps in the browser. Just not your browser.
The folks at GravityZoo have been hard at work porting the open-source OpenOffice desktop suite to their online application framework. GravityZoo CTO Marcel von Birgelen posted this note to the OpenOffice.org forums earlier this week:
The company's goal is to get OpenOffice apps running on its framework, which is basically a network-hosted operating system. All files and applications live on the network where they are accessible from any network-enabled device, be it a Vista machine or a handheld device.
A Vista machine, you say? Umm, yes. Currently, GravityZoo runs on top of the .NET 2.0 framework, which is a
little confusing since .NET 2.0 a Microsoft product. Since the company
is obviously embracing open-source tools, it would be nice to see them
build a version of their client for an open-source OS – or at least
build their application server upon an open-source networked framework using open standards.
