The City of London is to become Europe's largest WiFi hotspot next week, when wireless operator The Cloud switches on its sprawling mesh network.
That said, we're talking here about The City, not the city. Which is to say the traditional financial district, helpfully nicknamed the square mile, not the entire metro area. The era of the cricketopolis's 13m residents and workers getting WiFi is a while away yet, but The Cloud says it's working on it: the next target is bohemian Soho and its surrounding shopping districts. There's even competition, with local government planning its own rival network.

Subscriptions will be $12 monthly, with the service targeted at "consumers and municipal workers," since all the companies located in the square mile are unimaginably rich already and don't need it.
