Well, Sunshine Week may have been a bit of a downer here in the U.S., but in France, it's an entirely different story. The French government has decided to do the unthinkable: open its UFO files to the public.

Crypto137New Scientist reports: "A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where the announcement was made, 'to screen out uninvited UFOlogists,' an official explained."

Actually, the U.S. government has also declassified UFO files; it just doesn't have a way to centralize things on one website. But as the U.S. Air Force sums it up: "No UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security."

Oh yes, and they also didn't find any evidence that the sightings were linked to UFOs.

As for the French, it's nice they've consolidated the documents in one place. But good luck trying to access the website with all that UFO info; apparently overwhelming interest in flying saucers and little green men has caused the server to crash. I had no luck myself.

Anyhow, kudos to the French for openness.
