Driving at night can be scary for folks such as myself that have "night myopia" where their distance vision is severely hampered after the sun goes down. Combining night vision systems with obstacle identification technology could reduce accidents by automatically alerting drivers to potential hazards.

According to a new report from ABI Research, the latest night vision system being tested in Japan by Honda can effectively see objects in the road, but it is too costly at the moment for mass production. The first night vision systems gave drivers a better view of what was ahead, but did not provide alerts. Hopefully studies of the usefulness of the technology will encourage high end vehicles to implement it soon.

Until then, AAA offers some helpful tips on how to see better at night. Avoiding looking at bright lights when refilling the car and dimming the dash lights are practical and easy to implement suggestions.
