FOE UK Highlights Threat From Aviation Emissions

Lest you think cars are the only CO2 culprit, Friends of the Earth notes newly published UK stats that FOE says "highlight the growing threat from aviation emissions" — and, not incidentally, "show that the UK Government is still failing to tackle climate change":

UK Carbon dioxide emissions in 2005 were virtually unchanged from 2004 levels (only 0.1 per cent below). This means that they are still higher than 1997, when Labour came to power.

Between 2004 and 2005, CO2 emissions from domestic aviation increased by 7.1 per cent, while international aviation emissions increased by 5.7 per cent, due to an increased number of flights. Between 1990 and 2005, emissions from aviation fuel use more than doubled.

In the UK as elsewhere, political and corporate "leaders" alike are wringing their hands over global warming and, for the most part, doing little else. Meanwhile, anyone with even a remotely scientific bent — versus the various faith-based "act like nothing's wrong" ideologies guiding government and corporate decision-making — knows that if we don't act fast and make radical changes, our goose is quite literally cooked, along with our planet.

Maybe these people plan to be dead by 2040, but I don't, nor do my children. I see pockets of outrage out there, but it ain't enough, folks. Any thoughts about how to get these jokers off the dime?
