originally called Tim, but now known as Kim - has started to receivehormone treatment, in preparation for the operation that willeventually complete the sex change.

The child won't be able to legally have a sex-change operation until the age of 18, according to the story. Here's the frightening part:

Should Kim change her mind before the surgery, the procedure could bereversed. Doctors admit that the treatment involves a risk, however,
and that its effects on children as young as Kim are not fullyunderstood.
