Could a Trauma Center Have Saved Lincoln? (Part II: Gun Buffs Edition)

Following up on the earlier post about a seminar on whether Lincolncould have survived being assasssinated today…

Lincoln was shot with a .44 caliber Deringer pistol.

Gun experts: Is there a similar gun on the market today? The wholepoint of the seminar is a neat one, placing Lincoln in our time. But ifthere's no modern equivalent of Booth's pistol, then this exercise intime travel seems just a bit more moot.

Here's some background on Booth's pistol:

The Deringer pocket pistol achieved its greatest popularityduring the mid-1850s and was a favorite of civilians seeking a compact,
easily concealed firearm for use in personal defense.

Although the Deringer pistol was somewhat limited by its single-shotcapacity, its light weight and small size gave it a distinct advantageover bulkier, unconcealable alternatives, and the limitations of itsfiring capacity could be circumvented by carrying two pistols, whichwere sold as pairs for approximately $22 to $25 during that timeperiod.

The Deringer pistol's ubiquity, success, and infamy as a deadly weaponis apparent in its association with a number of prominent Californiamurders that took place during the 1850s, as well as its later use inthe assassination of President Lincoln. The latter homicide ensured thepermanent notoriety of the Deringer pistol while simultaneouslyfinalizing the incorporation of the word "derringer" into the Americanlexicon as a common noun denoting a concealable, short-barrelednonautomatic pistol.

Random trivia: A few months ago, I visited the Baltimore cemetery where Booth is buried.
There's a plot devoted to the Booth family (John Wilkes' grave isn'tmarked) and a monument engraved with the word BOOTH.

According to ahistory buff who gives tours of the cemetery, people like to putLincoln head pennies in each of the "O"s. (See photo above.)
