Popular Science has published its top 100 innovations of the year, and 13 awards were handed out in the automotive category.
The most interesting technologies in development for me were Mercedes' Adaptive Brake Lights and
BMW's Turbosteamer technology. Mercedes brake lights flash 5 times per second to warn the vehicles behind and has been proven to reduce accidents. Flashing lights of any kind are not permitted in the U.S.
today, but maybe we should consider changing the laws. BMW's technology uses the engine heat to build up steam that is used for additional power while also increasing fuel economy.
Also on the list are VW's convertible hard top with sunroof, Mercedes' Bluetec clean diesel sedan, and OnStar's turn by turn navigation system.
