New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson is getting some attention for pushing his state to spend $4 million on stem-cell research.

It's not a lot of money, even for a small state. But Richardson -- a potential presidential candidate in 2008 -- is already getting blowback, according to an AP story:

Governor Richardson is being asked by Archbishop Michael Sheehan to reconsider his plan to ask the Legislature next year to finance stem cell research.

Sheehan says the church is opposed to embryonic stem cell research because it kills innocent human life.

Richardson, by the way, is Catholic himself.

(Useless trivia alert: New Mexico actually has a state cookie, called the Biscochito. Maybe that explains why its governor is a man of, um, substance.)
