Honda developed a diesel engine that will burn as clean as gasoline engines while improving fuel efficiency. According to the New Energy Report, the system includes a catalytic converter that converts the nitrogen oxide emissions into "harmless" nitrogen.
Honda's new cars will be available within three years and will make the company unique in aggressively pursuing both hybrid and diesel vehicles. Could there be a diesel hybrid in the wings?
With Volkswagen, Ford and DaimlerChrysler all introducing diesels that meet the tougher emissions laws next year and GM's plans for diesel trucks, consumers who aren't into hybrids will have a similarly fuel-efficient alternative. The more choices the better, and hopefully the competition between the premium vehicles will pressure the companies to keep prices within most consumers' reach.
