More court fights over the Internet could erupt if a provision to a House appropriations bill passes. The legislation would require labels on sexually explicit Web sites. The sponsors say the labels would make it easier for filtering software to block access to all such sites.

Hey, I know! Let's whip up more fear and act like we're Doing Something to Protect the Children!

I still think that if every adult site had a splash page, no pictures, that said this is an adult site, enter at your own risk, that would pretty much take care of everything. Isn't that a label in itself? And don't adult sites all use all kinds of unambiguously porny keywords, making it possible to filter them without limiting access to breast cancer sites, etc.?

I'm not unilaterally against the idea of labels or filtering software and so on. I'm just ... tired and grouchy and annoyed that everything has to be so grandstanded and hyped up when everything could be solved so simply and elegantly if I were In Charge of Everything.
