Cape Town businessman Stephen van Rooyen and his American girlfriend Laura Brown, accused of distributing unauthorised stem-cell treatment to terminally ill patients, were apparently raking in huge amounts of money. The couple allegedly charged patients $24 000 for a once-off injection of 1.5 million stem cells. Regardless of a patient's disease, everyone received the same treatment.
This was revealed by an ex-employee and close friend of the couple, who does not want to be named. The woman worked for three years at Advanced Cell Therapeutics (ACT), a Hout Bay-based company owned by the couple.
