GM upgraded its OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics service to track the factors that contribute to fuel efficiency. The service will track emissions, tire pressure, and the amount of oil and send customers a report about how to optimize fuel efficiency.
GM quoted DOE statistics which claim that American drivers lose $10 million per day because of under-inflated tires. I can testify to the importance of tire pressure. Inflating my tires instantly added 3 mpg.
An even better idea would be to add fuel efficiency gauges to all vehicles. Putting the numbers in front of jack-rabbit drivers shows how the aggresive and start and stop driving hurts fuel economy, which is becoming even more of a drain on our collective wallets.
