Rand McNally and Motorola have teamed up to enable mobile phones to function as GPS navigation systems.
Motorola's mobile phone GPS software and Rand McNally's mapping and direction software have been combined so that the handsets can provide turn by turn directions similar to vehicle-based navigation at a lower price, according to the companies.
The press release doesn't give the details about this being a hands-free solution, but if the companies want to compete with car systems with a safe product, than this should be Bluetooth enabled and allow the audio to be played back through the car's speakers. Just dialing a phone can be enough of a distraction to cause an accident, so trying to view maps on a small phone screen sounds mighty dangerous.
