An annoying noise is driving some New Yorkers batty. The sound, alternately described as sounding like a roaring engine or a foghorn in a New York Daily News article, has been disturbing the peace in a Brooklyn neighborhood for almost a year. "The problem is, it's constant, 24 hours a day," said a chiropractor who's spent $2,000 trying to shut out the noise. "It's messed up my life really badly." Theorists suggest the sound could be coming from a nearby train yard or cargo ships anchored offshore, but the leading suspect is a water-treatment plant infamous for emitting foul odors. "At least with the smell, you can shut your window," said the cranky chiropractor. "But this noise? It's penetrating -- the whole apartment, the whole house, everything. I'll take the smell."
