Remember when you were in high school? What if you had been compelled to declare a major when you were 16 or 17? "Uhhh ... beer?" But Florida Republicans think that requiring high schoolers to pick a major, just like college students do, is a nifty way to get poorly performing schools to pick up the pace. So nifty, in fact, that they're pushing a bill, backed by Gov. Jeb Bush, that would do just that. Bush and others say that requiring high school students to concentrate on a particular field could prepare them better for college and the working world and reduce the dropout rate by making school more interesting. What it's likelier to do is produce young adults so narrowly focused as to make them completely uninteresting.
