General Motors says fuel cell vehicles will be cost and performance competitive in as little as four years.

For that to happen even within 10 years, it would require incredible advances in hydrogen storage and fuel processing technology, as well as hydrogen production from renewable sources.

GM is so confident that the company is getting close to commercialization that it is ending its technology partnership with Toyota. Before its recent ethanol awakening, GM had been betting the farm that fuel cell technology is its best hope for the future. It's a high stakes gamble that could lead the company back to the pole position, or threaten its long term health.
