Honda may aiming to drive past the competition with a $12,000 car that gets 80 miles per gallon. Honda is not confirming or denying that a hybrid Honda Fit will go on sale in Japan in 2007, according to an Edmunds report.
The standard engine Fit pictured here will go on sale this spring for about $13,500, so if the hybrid Fit comes to the U.S., but the company could price it below the $19,000 Insight that gets 60+ mpg. Honda Americanized the Fit by adding iPod compatibility.
Fitting the hybrid batteries into the Fit presents a spatial challenge, so perhaps Honda will be giving up a good chunk of the rear storage space.
