Paul Elias of the Associated Press reports that Gerald Schatten, once the right hand man of Hwang Woo-suk and his stem cell research lab in Korea, has asked to be removed as an author from a paper the team published in the journal Science in June.

Leading stem cell scientist Rudolf Jaenisch pretty much sums it up: "It's a very serious step. It's not good."

Schatten severed ties from Hwang in November, which led to an ongoing controversy about the ethics and validity of Hwang's work.
