At first glance, Chicken Little is just another CG-animated feature for kids. That's because most theatergoers will see Disney's take on the classic end-is-nigh tale projected in 2-D. But viewers in 100 theaters in major US markets will get to watch it in 3-D, thanks to a new system-developed by Beverly Hills, California-based Real D. The technology uses a single digital-cinema projector to flash 144 frames per second, alternating for left and right eyes. (Traditional 3-D projection uses two film projectors, one for each eye, that show 24 frames per second.) Real D's setup still requires silly-looking glasses, but the result is far crisper and more natural than conventional 3-D. "You can tilt your head as you watch and sit-anywhere in the theater - which you can't do with traditional 3-D systems," says Real D chairman Michael V. Lewis. So pick any seat, and beware falling acorns.
