Most social networking sites are also dating sites – a word which here means "connecting with other people for fun and sex" – either overtly or tacitly. TeamDating.com just launched with the idea that the best way to meet people for romance is through your friends. Instead of posting your own personal profile, you post a team profile for as many as four people per team. models pretending to be members of teamdating.com

Teams can be co-ed, and the whole idea is to find other teams you like and set up a group date where all of you go do something fun and see who resonates with who.

It makes sense, in a weird way, especially now that so many people stay single longer – or get single later in life – and end up dating different members of their social cicles.

One of my girlfriends, who describes MySpace and Friendster as "a virtual high school where everyone can be the popular girl," went to a MySpace party where a group of people came together in person for the first time. Only two people left un-hooked-up.

The group energy diffuses the pressure of the First Date. And it seems like groups go do things, versus just dinner.

It'll be interesting to see whether TeamDating can survive when other social networking sites serve much the same purpose for free.
