The voters of Denver have spoken, voting by a 54-46 percent margin to legalize the possession of an ounce of pot by adults. While marijuana advocates -- who argue that a little grass is far more benign than getting blotto at your local bar -- were happy with the vote, "the authorities," predictably, were not. Now the coppers say they'll circumvent the will of the people by enforcing tougher state possession laws instead. H.L. Mencken wasn't describing the nuances of intoxication when he uttered his famous line about Puritanism -- "the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy" -- but the spirit is the same. Lighten up, man.
