25 Women 'WoW' San Francisco

Female netheads choose from among their own the most influential women on the Web. A gamer, a senator, and a network journalist are among the honorees. By Joyce Slaton.

Web-wise women on the move were recognized Monday by a San Francisco group, which announced the winners of its second annual Top25 Women on the Web Awards.

Cyd Harrell, point woman for San Francisco Women on the Web, or SFWoW, said the awards were created to recognize women's success online.

"One of our major missions as a women's organization in the technology field is to promote women's achievements," Harrell said. "Our Top25 award is a way to shine a light on the work that is being done by women on the Internet."

Harrell said the Top25 winners cover a wide Web continuum. "There's much more to the Internet than just technology. We certainly wanted to point out achievements in that area, but in addition the Web offers new communities and new types of businesses which are a major part of the emerging culture. We feel it is vital to recognize all the different ways women have contributed to these developments."

A panel of prominent women in technology -- including Macromedia engineer Sarah Allen and NPR's TechNation host Moria Gunn -- selected the winners, who were all nominated by members of SFWoW.

The winners appear on the Top25 site. The list includes Senator Barbara Boxer, ABC technology correspondent Gina Smith, GrrlGamer creator Nikki Douglas, Institute for Women and Technology director Anita Borg, and National Center for Supercomputing Applications engineer and researcher Nancy Yeager.

Rebecca Eisenberg, a columnist for the San Francisco Examiner and CBS MarketWatch among other media outlets, was also honored.

"I'm incredibly flattered to have won this award," Eisenberg said. "When I look at that list, a couple of the other women have been great support for me, and it makes me really happy to be up there with them. Technology is still largely a boys' club and we need to work together to make opportunities."

The Top25 Award Ceremony will be held 20 January 1999 in San Francisco.
